What moisturizers do
Moisturizers combine ingredients that attract water, smooth spaces between surface cells and reduce water loss. Products differ in how they balance those functions.
Humectants, emollients and occlusives
Humectants such as glycerin and hyaluronic acid help bind water. Emollients improve surface smoothness. Occlusive ingredients reduce water loss. These categories overlap, and formula performance cannot be predicted from one highlighted ingredient alone.
Texture is functional
Gels and lotions may feel lighter; creams and ointments are often richer. The best choice is one a person can use consistently without unacceptable irritation or congestion.
Acne-prone does not mean moisture-free
Acne treatments can be drying. A compatible moisturizer may improve tolerance. “Non-comedogenic” is a helpful label cue but not a universal guarantee.
